Things That Go Bump In The Night

A couple of weeks ago Deer River got hit hard with high winds and storms. We were lucky,  and other than the power being out for about an hour are mostly spared.
However the other night with nothing more than the possibility of a thunderstorm forcast, we got hit. We had the window air conditioner running which can be loud.  But over the nose of the air conditioner I could hear wind. Like wind that did NOT sound good. When I peaked out the wind,  I found wind that did not look good. Just when I was about to wake Kyle up,  something loudly but the house.
Kyle woke up with a "what was that". To which I replied, "It is not looking good out there, that was something hitting the roof." We got more appropriately drrssed, and headed into the family room to look out the window.  At which point something else hit the roof. So we decided we better head down to the basement. Ben meet us in the office wondering what the heck was going on and what that loud noise was. Nate was sleeping.
Things calmed down fairly quickly, and we were left to wonder what had hit the house. Kyle walked around the back yard and didn't see anything too concerning. Although the canoe had been blown into the yard and was sitting upright in the middle of the yard.  We finally found it when he looked out the bedroom window that faces north. The top of a big pine tree that had snapped off. We were lucky, the house was not damaged other than a few dings. We were also lucky that we didn't lose power. There are still people in the are and in Duluth who are without power even 3 days later.
It took a bit to get calmed down and get back to sleep after all that excitement, so we were plenty tired the next day. Except for Nate...who slept through it all.

  1. Finally got caught up on blog reading! We have a similar tree in our yard, still waiting on the friend with the chain saw to come help us clear it out...in the meantime the horses have enjoyed eating all the bark off it :)
